Enfield Town Guide

A former market town, Enfield is now a largely residential area which offers all the advantages of being very close to the centre of London, yet far enough to allow for a little countryside to emerge here and there. It’s the best place for those who can’t decide whether they are nature lovers or city dwellers.

The area is also renowned for its great schools. St George RC, for example, is one of the best primary schools around, and Enfield County Secondary is considered “outstanding”! This makes it the ideal area for raising a family.
Of course, such exceptional locales don’t come cheap, but some bargains can be found on the east side of the borough. Enfield Island Village may not be as pretty as the lovely Georgians or Victorian cottages, but it is a compromise that’s definitely worth considering.

Along Chase Side, explore the array of independent and antique shops and enjoy several nice pubs, among which the very pleasant Crown and Horseshoes, a Greene King pub for those who want to have a lovely meal in a delightful waterside beer garden. Other restaurants include the interesting Tex Mex Chimichanga and Enzo’s Italian restaurant. And for those want to enjoy a nice fish & chips evening, they will find what they are looking for near London Road.

Grovelands Park is also a must-see for anyone looking to spend a pleasant family afternoon with the kids, or to have a romantic walk in some lovely wooded areas, featuring ponds and water birds.

If you like quirky buildings, you will love the Southgate Tube Station made of brick, concrete and glass, that resembles a “newly landed art deco UFO”!

Fun fact: the very first cash point in the UK was installed in Enfield, and the first person to use it was Reg Varney, the English actor well known for playing Stan Butler in the TV sitcom On the Buses, who withdrew the first paper voucher there in 1967.
As for sports and leisure, there is something for everyone with plenty of outdoor activities to choose from such as football, tennis, the London Mini Marathon, night hiking, jogging, etc. and all the indoor sports you can think of in the leisure centre of your choice. Enfield also features a golf club and healthy activities for older people.

The sport’s section of Enfield’s Wikipedia page provides some good information and more links to sport in Enfield, or see the links on the left for our removal services.

If you love the busy life of the city coupled with the quality of life of the countryside, Enfield is definitely the borough that was meant for you!
