The nearest main line station to Buntingford is Royston, on the East Coast Mainline, approximately 7 miles to the north. Trains to London (Kings Cross) run at approximately 15-20 minute intervals at peak times with an overall journey time of around 45 minutes. Trains run to London (Liverpool Street) from Newport (Essex), 10.5 miles to the east, but are less frequent (40 minute intervals at peak) taking just over an hour to complete the journey. The town lies on the A10 London-Cambridge road, equidistant between the A1 to the west, and the M11 to the east. Stanstead Airport is around 12 miles away, Luton 16 miles and Heathrow 38 miles.
Buntingford was established as a market town and grew as a result of its importance as a staging post on the main London-Cambridge turnpike road, once Ermine Street, now the A10. It can still boast a number of fine medieval, Elizabethan half-timbered and Georgian houses and coaching inns. It even has its own brewery, producing traditional cask conditioned ales. It also retains its traditional weekly market. Largely due to its good transport links to London and Cambridge, Buntingford remains a popular destination with those looking to move out of town to a quieter life in the country.
