Radlett is situated in the Tykes Water Valley and, being surrounded by the Metropolitan Green Belt, is a popular destination for people wishing to move to the area, although this does have a knock-on effect on house prices. It is regarded as a pleasant village and has an air of prosperity, with many detached houses surrounded by large gardens. Although there has been a village of Radlett since the fifteenth century, it did not change very much until the arrival of the railway in the eighteen sixties and it is from this period that its prosperity grew.
If you do move to Radlett, you will find no shortage of cultural activities, with the Radlett Centre, a 300 seat community venue, heading the list. A wide variety of theatrical and musical performances are held here and there are also large rooms for hire for events such as wedding or birthday celebrations or meetings of local groups in the smaller rooms available. In addition there are regular displays of local artists’ work and there is a thriving local art group.
Radlett is under the local Parish Council of Aldenham, who have several parks and open spaces on Watling Street, as well as Scrubbits Wood and the Phillimore Recreation Ground which offers a children’s play area with outdoor table tennis, a football pitch and multi-use games area. Just up the road is found Shenley Park, which is 45 acre country park, including woodland walks and an amphitheatre in the landscaped walled garden. A little further away is the Bushey Museum, with its art collections and interesting insights into local history.
Nor are sporting facilities neglected, with Radlett offering tennis, squash, cricket, rugby and a Golf Centre with a floodlit driving range, and a 6-hole course which is open to everyone.
Being close to the Elstree Studios, it is not unusual to find well-known faces exploring the shops, restaurants and pubs in the area, as you take the dog for a walk or go for a morning stroll, although you might not recognise them immediately out of the period costumes or glamorous hair and make-up! Another “claim to fame” for Radlett was that the village was hit by a German missile, causing 17 fatalities in the Second World War, but it is usually synonymous with peaceful English village life at its best.
