Stevenage Guide

With a population of around 85,000 people, Stevenage is one of the largest of the Hertfordshire towns. Although there has been a settlement here since Roman times, the biggest influence of the nature of the town was when it was designated a “new town” in the early 1950’s. The New Towns Act of 1946, following the end of World War 2, specified separate areas for residential and industrial use, together with dedicated recreational areas. This improves the air quality and gives people moving to, and living in Stevenage access to some very pleasant open spaces, including the 120 acre Fairlands Valley Park, which is right in the centre of the town.

There have been extensive cycling routes in Stevenage since the 1980’s, making cycling to work a definite option. Many of the leisure and fitness centres in Stevenage and four neighbouring towns are managed by the non-profit making organisation, Stevenage Leisure, providing good access to a variety of sporting amenities including swimming pools, fitness suites, dance & exercise studios, racket sports, spa and steam rooms, outdoor pitches, and the Stevenage Golf & Conference Centre. Nor are cultural activities ignored for anyone wishing to move house to this town, with regular musical and dramatic events taking place at the Gordon Craig Theatre or the large conference hall in the leisure centre.
