All About Archway N19
Until recently Archway wasn’t the official name of the community, it was called variously Highgate, Upper Holloway or Islington. Unlike most other areas of North London which have had their name for several centuries Archway was mixed in with several other areas. It eventually received its name at least unofficially, due to the large archway road bridge that was built in 1897. Since so many people used the name Archway for the district in 1939 the local train station was renamed Archway Highgate Station.
The Archway Bridge itself was built to connect the Highgate Bypass to the Great North Road. There were several small and steep roads in the way so there were two choices build a tunnel or a bridge. The tunnel attempts all failed when the ground repeatedly collapsed, so city planners decided to build a bridge instead. In 1897 the bridge was completed and connected the villages of Highgate and Crouch End.
