Amersham Guide

If you like 17th and 18th century buildings, Amersham in Buckinghamshire is a town for you. Known as the Gateway to the Chilterns, it is the perfect combination of old-timey charm and modern amenities.

It is well connected thanks to its railway linking Amersham Station to the London Underground; the construction of a High Speed Railway between London and Birmingham, however, has been causing uproar ever since the plans were unveiled in 2010. A tunnel would run through the countryside and emerge just above School Lane, in the vicinity of Old Amersham High Street.

This aside, moving to Amersham can be a good choice for anyone looking to enjoy the charm of the Old Town coupled with the close proximity to the capital and all modern amenities. The town centre even has its own little museum, a library and a hospital.

There are several nursery and primary schools in the area, as well as secondary and grammar schools nearby, all of which have a very good reputation. Many families actually decide to move there exclusively for the great schools!

Besides all the lovely boutiques, gift shops and antique and speciality shops in the Old Town, Amersham offers a wide range of popular chains, among which M&S and Waitrose. You will also find many pubs, restaurants and tea rooms along the High Street.

In terms of sports and leisure, Amersham also has a lot to offer. The Equestrian Centre offers off-road horseback riding and the countryside is lovely for walks, runs and bike rides. The town also has a cricket club, a hockey club, a football team, a Judo club… The Chiltern Pools complex features a climbing wall, three swimming pools, a great gym facility…

Properties in Old Amersham can get a bit pricey, but the area certainly has cachet. For more affordable houses and flats, head to Amersham-on-the-Hill, the more recent part of the town built around the railway station. This is also preferable if you need to commute daily.

Amersham is the place to be if you are looking for the peace and tranquillity of a market town but do not wish to live too far out of London. This locale is the proof that you do not need to move “out in the sticks” just to enjoy a bit of countryside and a nice, safe place to raise your children. The perfect place for ex-Londoners longing for a bit of fresh air!
